Jesus and Peter

John 21:15) When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." 16) He said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." 17) He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep. 18 Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go." 19) (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, "Follow me."

When I first read this the context was confusing to me, but later on I read that in the greek there are many words that when translated become the word Love.



One of which is "Agape" or unconditional love


Then another is "Philos" or Brotherly love

John 21:15) When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you Agape me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I Philos you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16) He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you Agape me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I Philos you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17) He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you Philos me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you Philos me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I Philos you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep."


the third time Jesus asks Peter he shifts from the unconditional Agape love to the weaker brotherly Philos love, which Peter grieves because Jesus has reduced his expectations of him, knowing Peter is not ready to give everything to his Lord.

Jesus and the Beloved Apostle

John 21:20) Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, "Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?" 21) When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about this man?" 22) Jesus said to him, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!" 23) So the saying spread abroad among the brothers that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?"
24) This is the disciple who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and we know that his testimony is true.
25) Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

John 14:1) "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2) In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4) And you know the way to where I am going." 5) Thomas said to him, "Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?" 6) Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7) If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him."

8) Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us." 9) Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10) Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11) Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.


12) "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13) Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14) If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

John 14:15) “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16) And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17) even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.




18) “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19) Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20) In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21) Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22) Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23) Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24) Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.


25) “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26) But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27) Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 28) You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29) And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30) I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, 31) but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

Women Accompanying Jesus

Luke 08:1) Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, 2) and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3) and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

Matthew 9:1) And getting into a boat he crossed over and came to his own city. 2) And behold, some people brought to him a paralytic, lying on a bed. And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven." 3) And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, "This man is blaspheming." 4) But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, "Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5) For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 6) But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"—he then said to the paralytic—"Rise, pick up your bed and go home." 7) And he rose and went home. 8) When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.

Jesus Calls Matthew

Matthew 9:9) As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, "Follow me." And he rose and followed him.
10 And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. 11) And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" 12) But when he heard it, he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13) Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."
